First Ant Swarm of 2012

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

It’s official, Blue Chip Pest Services received its first Odorous House ant swarm call for the 2012 season.  Trust me when I say this is not normal. And even though we had a spring like 68 degree day last week that shouldn’t have been enough to cause a swarm.  But it did.

Normally a swarm won’t happen until early spring when we have several warm days stretched together with a little bit of rain.  This type of condition (warmth and rain) after a long winter makes for an excellent swarm environment for ants and termites.

Hopefully this is an isolated incident.  This is normally the one time of year most homeowner or business owners don’t have to worry to much about insect issues in or around their property. But if by some unnatural occurrence you too get a ant swarm, give us a call or get you DIY supplies at one of our three locations.

Cluster Flies – An Over-wintering Pest

Friday, November 18th, 2011

A cluster fly is best described as an over-sized house fly.  They do not bite and are truly a nuisance pest.  This fly will congrete in 100′s and sometimes in 1000′s.  They become a great nuisance as they become very active on mild winter days.  Like other over-wintering pests, these flies go for the first light outside the void that they were in and sometimes that light is from inside our house.

The best way to try and control these flies is prevent them from entering the structure.  Make sure caulk is good around windows and doors, utilities entering the home are sealed tight and there are no structure defects in the siding or soffit area of the home.  If cluster flies are a yearly problem in your home, use a pesticide to treat the sunny side of your home monthly during the fall months before they gain entry into your home.

Deer Mice – can be a serious issue

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

Deer mice are slightly bigger than a common house mouse with a distinctive white under belly. This color combination gives the mouse it’s name as it has the same coloration as a white tail deer.  The reason the Deer mouse can be such a big problem, is the fact that they are a common carrier of a disease, Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome.

Now, just because they are a carrier doesn’t mean that every Deer mouse has the disease.  However, with that being said, it is important to treat every Deer mouse situation as if they do have the disease.  What do I mean by this?  Any time you come across a Deer mouse infestation it needs to be addressed immediately.  Don’t let the situation get out of hand.  The only way to get the disease into your body comes from the Deer mouses dried fecal matter.  If you have a infestation of Deer mice, there will be a lot of fecal matter that can become air born after it has dried out and disturbed.

In the case of an infestation, hiring a professional company to eradicate this problem is best bet.  However, the D.I.Y.’ers  can purchase products such as sticky traps and snap traps to catch the mice but make sure you use rubber gloves and even a dust mask when cleaning up the fecal and urine deposits.

House Mouse – Control

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

There are a variety of mouse traps that can be used to solve a mouse problem.  The four most commonly used traps for mice are snap traps, glue traps, bait traps and mechanical traps.  Let’s discuss these four a little bit now.

There is a reason why the snap trap has been around for a long time, it’s inexpensive, fairly easy to use and they work.   When using this type of a trap, make sure you place them against the wall with the trip mechanism firing towards the wall so that no matter which way the rodent approaches the trap it can fire of cleanly.  If you use an attractant, make sure it is something that can’t be pulled off, the best lures will cause the mouse to work to get the meal and therefore will cause the trap to be tripped.

Glue traps can be an effective way to control mice, but I would not use this method without combining it with one of the other methods.  When using glue traps, you want to place them as close to the problem area as possible.  The whole design of the glue trap is for a mouse to accidentally run onto one by mistake and get stuck.

Baits are highly effective, but once the mouse has eaten a lethal dose, it can die almost anywhere.  The problem with that is the odors sometime cause an unpleasantness in the home for a day or two.  Bait stations should only be used  in areas that children and pets can not access them.  But the benefit of the bait station, is that it can be placed out prior to a problem to hopefully solve a potential problem before it becomes one.

The last type of trap we will discuss is the mechanical trap.  These traps are designed to take advantage of the mouses curiosity.  Since mice love to explore new things, the mouse will explore this device and once inside it will not allow them to exit.  Once the mouse trapped you have to option to release the mouse back into the wild.  The problem with is, once the mouse has been freed, it may come back into your house and will more than likely now know not to go into a trap like this again.

At Blue Chip,  we use a combination of these methods in the field to gain control of the most difficult situations.  The one things I must stress before anything is done is to do a through inspection.  Finding out how the rodents are getting in and where they are harboring is key to a successful rodent program.
