Don’t Spray That Ant

Did you know that there are some St. Louis ants that will cause your problems to get worse if spray them.  It’s true!  Odorous House and Pharaoh can both split their colonies in to smaller groups if pesticides are sprayed into or around the nest.  The splitting of the colony is called budding and it is a defensive mechanism to ensure survival.  The  best ant / pest control approach for these small ants is to use baits.  Baits are very low in toxicity and decimate colonies before they know what hit them.

How do you know if the ants are Odorous House Ants or Pharaoh Ants?  This can be very tricky if you don’t have a lot of experience with either species.  The best way to tell if it is a Odorous House ant is to crush one between your fingers and smell it.  That’s right, smell it.  If it has a rotten coconut or citrus smell it is more than likely a Odorous House ant.  If the ant lacks any smell at all then you might be dealing with a pavement ant.

Now, if you have Pharaoh ants there is no crush test that can be done for identification purposes.  Pharaoh ants are very small though, much smaller than a Pavement ant.  My suggestion would be if you have ants smaller than a Pavement ant then you should just bait them to be safe.  Baiting after all is truly a great way to control social ants.
