Deer Mice – can be a serious issue

Deer mice are slightly bigger than a common house mouse with a distinctive white under belly. This color combination gives the mouse it’s name as it has the same coloration as a white tail deer.  The reason the Deer mouse can be such a big problem, is the fact that they are a common carrier of a disease, Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome.

Now, just because they are a carrier doesn’t mean that every Deer mouse has the disease.  However, with that being said, it is important to treat every Deer mouse situation as if they do have the disease.  What do I mean by this?  Any time you come across a Deer mouse infestation it needs to be addressed immediately.  Don’t let the situation get out of hand.  The only way to get the disease into your body comes from the Deer mouses dried fecal matter.  If you have a infestation of Deer mice, there will be a lot of fecal matter that can become air born after it has dried out and disturbed.

In the case of an infestation, hiring a professional company to eradicate this problem is best bet.  However, the D.I.Y.’ers  can purchase products such as sticky traps and snap traps to catch the mice but make sure you use rubber gloves and even a dust mask when cleaning up the fecal and urine deposits.
